Chapter 25

The next morning, after a much-needed cry and a hot shower, Elyra found her composure again. She washed and styled her hair, calming her curls into submission, then applied a full face of modest makeup. She dressed in dark pants and a sweater and secured her small diamond studs in her ears. She took a breath and hoped she looked more the part than she felt.

The group was assembled in the training room, chatting over coffee and toast. The low buzz quieted when she stepped in, all eyes turning to her.

The gnawing guilt pecked at her heart, but she swatted it away. She would allow herself to be sad for their losses, but she would no longer carry the burden of guilt. There just wasn't time for that. They needed to proceed as if the failed attempt to free Wente hadn't happened. It didn't change what they had to do next. Secure the city center and take over the government buildings. She needed all her focus in that room.

"Good morning everyone," Elyra said taking her seat between Rogan and Cable, subtly avoiding Rogan’s eyes. She reached for the coffee and a slice of buttered toast, then looked around at the small council with an easy smile. Her small council.

A mumbled mixture of "Highness" and "El" came back at her in greeting.

"Ok, so as you all know, we're here this morning to discuss the city center coup,” Elyra started.

"I still don't understand why we're not going after the palace directly. Why bother with the downtown?" Raynes asked.

"Because it's the seat of central government. I'm not talking the Ministry, but the day to day things that keep this city alive—the governor's mansion, the courthouse, the central bank," Cable said.

"We don't have the resources to attack the palace directly, so we need to inch our way into control. Cut off access to money," Rogan said. He paused for a moment. "Take the governor captive."

The room fell silent. Donal chortled then.

"You're not serious. That's ludicrous," he said. "You'll never get to Grey. He'll be guarded by top men."

"One would imagine but it's not entirely true," Elyra said. "He'll have his personal bodyguard and the mansion and offices will have armed guards but it's nothing we can't handle. Pantone doesn't see Governor Grey as all that powerful, so he won't be expecting an attack there."

"Then why bother with him if Pantone doesn't care about him?" Raynes said.

"Because he is important. He runs the capital city of this nation. If we take him hostage, the Council will force Pantone to listen," Elyra said. Her stomach fluttered and she prayed that was actually true.

"This is risky," Donal said.

"There's something else I think we need to do," Elyra went on. She swallowed the knot in her throat. "I think it's time to make my position known to the people. Make a public statement."

Everyone stared at her for a few long moments, processing.

"What does that mean exactly?" Cable asked.

"I'm ready to declare myself the right queen. Publicly. And ask for allegiance against Pantone.
